Pacific Coast Highway

One of the great drives of the world. The Pacific Coast Highway runs roughly 400 miles along the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles — through Big Sur, past Hearst Castle, through the beach towns of the Central Coast and into Southern California. It is the reason many British visitors come to California in the first place.

Why the PCH deserves more than two days

Most visitors underestimate the Pacific Coast Highway. They budget two days, drive too fast, stop at the obvious viewpoints and wonder what all the fuss was about. The PCH rewards patience — it is better experienced at 45mph than 65, with a night in Big Sur rather than a glance from the road.

Our recommendation: allow five days minimum for the full route. Three days gets you the highlights. Anything less is doing it a disservice.

Key stops along the route

Carmel-by-the-Sea — A small, distinctive town worth a night. Excellent restaurants, independent shops and the start of the most dramatic section of the highway heading south.

Big Sur — Not a town but a stretch of coastline. The section between Carmel and San Simeon is where the PCH earns its reputation — cliffs dropping into the Pacific, redwood forests, the Bixby Creek Bridge. Budget at least one night here.

Morro Bay — A working fishing town anchored by the extraordinary Morro Rock. Underrated, unpretentious and genuinely Californian.

San Luis Obispo — Lively university town, excellent for an overnight stop, good food and a convenient halfway point.

Santa Barbara — The most elegant city on the Central Coast. Spanish colonial architecture, good wine country nearby, and a pace of life that makes most visitors wish they'd allowed more time.

Practical information

A hire car is essential — there is no meaningful public transport along the PCH. Petrol stations thin out considerably through Big Sur; fill up before you enter this stretch. Mobile signal is unreliable for extended sections, so download offline maps before you go.

Accommodation in Big Sur is limited and books out months in advance in peak season. This is one stretch of the route where planning ahead genuinely matters.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive the Pacific Coast Highway?

The full route from San Francisco to Los Angeles is around 400 miles and takes approximately 9 hours without stops. Most visitors sensibly spread it over 3-5 days, stopping at Big Sur, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara along the way.

Which direction should I drive the Pacific Coast Highway?

South to north (Los Angeles to San Francisco) puts you on the ocean side of the road with unobstructed coastal views. North to south (San Francisco to Los Angeles) means the views are to your right. Both work well — it depends on where your flights land.

What is the best time of year to drive the Pacific Coast Highway?

April to October is ideal. Summer brings crowds and some coastal fog (particularly in June, known locally as "June Gloom"). September and October offer warm weather, clearer skies and fewer visitors. Winter is driveable but occasional storms can close sections of the road.
