Best time to visit California from the UK

California is a year-round destination — but the experience varies enormously depending on when you go. Here is an honest, month-by-month guide from a family who lives there.

The short answer

For most UK visitors, late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit California. The weather is excellent, the crowds are manageable, and the prices are lower than peak summer. If you can only go in summer, go — it is still wonderful. If you have flexibility, use it.

But California is large enough and varied enough that the right answer depends on what you want to do. Here is the full picture.

Month by month

January

Southern California is mild and often sunny — Orange County and Los Angeles regularly see temperatures of 18-20°C in January, which strikes most British visitors as extraordinary. The beaches are quiet, the hotels are cheap, and the restaurants are easy to book.

The Sierra Nevada is deep in snow. Yosemite Valley is open but Tioga Pass (the high route through the park) is closed. Sequoia is a snowshoe destination. Death Valley is at its most beautiful and most accessible — cool enough to hike comfortably, and the winter light on the salt flats is extraordinary.

Grey whales begin their southward migration past the California coast in December and January — whale watching out of Newport Beach or Monterey is excellent at this time of year.

February

February is when Yosemite's Firefall happens. For roughly two weeks in mid-February, Horsetail Fall on El Capitan is lit at sunset and glows deep orange — one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles in the United States. The window is narrow, it is entirely weather dependent, and most visitors have never heard of it.

Southern California remains mild. Half Term falls in February for most UK schools — prices rise accordingly for the week, but Orange County and Los Angeles are excellent family destinations at this time of year.

Big Sur can be wet and dramatic in February — not ideal for the PCH drive, but atmospheric if you don't mind the weather.

March

Spring begins to arrive. Wildflowers appear in the deserts — Joshua Tree and the Antelope Valley poppy reserve can be spectacular in March, though the bloom depends on winter rainfall and is never guaranteed. Search for "superbloom" forecasts as March approaches if this is on your list.

The coast warms up. San Francisco's famous fog begins to lift. Yosemite waterfalls start to build as the snowpack begins to melt. School Easter holidays fall in March or April — book early if you are travelling during this window.

April

One of the best months to visit. Yosemite waterfalls are building toward their peak, the weather is warm but not hot, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Wildflower season continues in the desert. The PCH is excellent — clear skies, good light, and far fewer camper vans than summer.

Tioga Pass into Yosemite typically opens in late May or early June depending on snowpack — it may still be closed in April, limiting access to the high country.

May

Our top recommendation for most visitors. Yosemite waterfalls are at or near their peak from the snowmelt — Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall are spectacular. The Half Dome cables go in in late May, opening the season for the summit hike. Temperatures are warm throughout the state without being extreme. Prices are below their summer peak.

The coast is beautiful in May. Big Sur is excellent. Orange County beach weather begins in earnest. San Francisco is clear and sunny before the summer fog arrives.

June

Early June is still excellent — the waterfalls are running strong, the Half Dome cables are in place, and the crowds are building but not yet at peak. UK schools break up in late June, which marks the start of the busy season.

Note: June is fog season in San Francisco. "June Gloom" — a marine layer that sits over the Bay Area through much of June — is real. The city can be overcast and cool while Los Angeles is sunny and warm. This is normal and lifts by afternoon most days, but it surprises visitors who expect wall-to-wall California sunshine.

July and August

Peak season. Schools are out across the UK and the US, Disneyland and the national parks are at their busiest, and prices are at their highest. That said, California in summer is still California — the beaches are glorious, the weather is reliable, and everything is open and running at full capacity.

The coast is cooled by the marine layer and rarely gets uncomfortably hot — Orange County and San Francisco are pleasant even in August. Inland is a different story: the Central Valley, Death Valley and the Mojave Desert can exceed 45°C. Yosemite Valley gets very hot in August and crowds at the valley floor are significant.

If you are going in summer: book everything early. Alcatraz sells out weeks ahead. Yosemite timed entry reservations open 28 days in advance and go quickly. The Ahwahnee Hotel books out a year ahead. Do not leave any of this to chance.

September

Our joint top recommendation alongside May. The summer crowds disappear almost overnight after the US Labor Day weekend (first Monday of September). The weather remains excellent — often better than August, particularly on the coast. Hotel rates drop noticeably. Restaurants are easier to book. The national parks feel like a different place.

Wine country is at harvest in September and October — the Napa and Sonoma valleys are at their most beautiful and most atmospheric. The Half Dome cables typically come down in mid-October, so September is your last reliable window for the summit.

Yosemite waterfalls are lower in September than in spring — the snowmelt is long finished. But the valley itself is stunning, the light is extraordinary, and the relative quiet after summer makes it a completely different experience.

October

October is arguably the most beautiful month in California. The light is golden, the temperatures are warm but not hot, and the colours — particularly in the Sierra Nevada and wine country — are extraordinary. UK half term falls in late October, which causes a brief price spike, but outside that week October is excellent value.

The Half Dome cables come down in mid-October. Tioga Pass closes for winter — typically late October or early November depending on snowfall. If high country Yosemite is on your list, do it in September or early October.

November

The quiet season begins. Southern California remains warm and pleasant — the off-season in Orange County means genuinely empty beaches, easy restaurant bookings, and hotel rates at their lowest. Northern California gets its first rains. The Sierra Nevada begins to receive significant snowfall.

Thanksgiving (late November) is the busiest travel period in the US calendar. If your trip overlaps with Thanksgiving weekend, book everything well in advance — flights, accommodation and restaurants are all under pressure.

December

Southern California Christmas is a genuinely lovely experience — mild temperatures, festive atmosphere, and Disneyland decorated for Christmas is one of those things that sounds tacky, but isn't. The beaches are quiet. The hotel rates are low outside the Christmas week itself.

The Sierra Nevada is in full winter mode. Mammoth Mountain and Lake Tahoe open for ski season — typically from November or December depending on snowfall. If skiing is on your agenda, California's mountain resorts are excellent.

Specific experiences — best timing

Yosemite waterfalls

Peak: May and early June. The snowmelt feeds Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall to their maximum volume. By August the falls are significantly reduced; by September Yosemite Falls may be dry.

Yosemite Firefall

Mid-February only. Roughly two weeks, weather dependent. Plan the entire trip around this window if it is on your list.

Half Dome cables

Late May to mid-October. Apply for permits well in advance via the recreation.gov lottery. The cables are physically removed outside this window.

Pacific Coast Highway

Year-round since Big Sur reopened in January 2026, but April to October gives the best weather and light. Avoid holiday weekends when the road gets congested.

Whale watching

Grey whales: December to April (southward migration) and March to May (northward). Blue whales: June to October off the California coast. Dolphins: year-round from Newport Beach — sightings are almost guaranteed on any given day.

Wine country

Harvest season (September to October) is the most atmospheric time to visit Napa and Sonoma. Spring (April to May) is beautiful when the vines are green. Summer is busy and hot. Winter is quiet and the tasting rooms are empty — good for serious wine enthusiasts who want time with the winemakers.

Death Valley

October to April only. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 50°C and are genuinely dangerous. The park is at its most beautiful in the early morning light of spring and autumn.

Disneyland

Any time of year, but avoid US school holidays (summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break in March/April) if crowds are a concern. January, February and early March are the quietest periods.

What about the flight?

UK to Los Angeles is typically 10-11 hours direct. UK to San Francisco is similar — 10-11 hours from London Heathrow. Both routes are served by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United and American among others.

Jet lag heading westbound (UK to California) is generally more manageable than the return. You will likely feel tired early in the evening for the first two or three days. This is why we recommend starting your trip in Orange County rather than diving straight into a busy city — a beach, an early night, and a decent meal is the best jet lag cure there is.

Our recommendation

If you have complete flexibility: September is our single top pick. The summer crowds are gone, the weather is perfect, the prices have dropped, the Half Dome cables are still in place, and wine country is at harvest.

If you are travelling with school-age children: late May gives you the best of everything — Yosemite waterfalls at peak, good weather, and prices just below the summer spike.

If budget is the priority: January or November offer Southern California at its most affordable, with empty beaches and mild weather that will make your friends at home deeply envious.
